Built in 1970, UCSC’s Family Student Housing (FSH) is home to a community of student families with a long history of activism, a thriving gift economy, and apartments in disrepair. For years the university has been threatening to tear FSH down; construction for the new FSH is supposedly imminent but continually delayed. “The Last Generation: Family Student Housing” is a portrait of this community—its residents and its architecture—and an exploration of what it means to make a home—as a place of family, a place of transience, and a site of political expression.
“Family Student Housing: The Last Generation” was exhibited at the Greenhouse Project in Santa Cruz from June 2024-March 2025. An 11x16 inch broadside (for participants to take home) featured the essayistic vignettes that accompany each family portrait.
